Casino at BHU: Shiv Sena takes to street

Varanasi, Dec 27 (UNI) Shiv Sena activists took to streets here today against the opening af a makeshift casino at the national conference of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) underway at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU).

''We protest the opening of the casino by pharma companies on the BHU campus for entertaining delegates attending the ASICON-2006, the annual conference of ASI,'' Sena leaders Gulshan Kapoor and Ajay Chaubey said leading the agitation outside the BHU gate.

''The central varsity was established by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya for the preservation and promotion of Indian culture, but the BHU administration has dishonoured its founder by allowing pharma companies to set up a casino at the ASICON venue,'' they added.

The Sena activists set the effigy of BHU administration afire and demanded the casino be closed immediately. ''Failure of BHU administration to close down the casino will compel us to intensify the stir,'' they warned.

''BHU needs a students union not a casino,'' they said, adding while on one hand the varsity is hosting top-notch surgeons and on the other using force to quell peacefull anti-reservation movement being headed by its own junior doctors.
