Retrenched workers get unemployment allowance

New Delhi, Dec 26 (UNI) Workers rendered unemployed due to closures, retrenchment and permanent invaldity have received nearly Rs one crore as unemployment allowance in various parts of the country till the end of October this year.

The unemployment allowance was disbursed under the Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyana Yojana by the Employees' State Insurance Corporation.

As many as 757 out of 1304 applications were found eligible in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, Goa and Anhdra Pradesh.

Another 140 applicaitons are under process.

The Yojana has been in operation since April last. Under the scheme unemployment allowance is paid to workers for six months who are rendered unemployed involuntarily, on account of closure of factories, establishments, retrenchment or permanent invalidity, not less that 50 per cent, arising out of non- employment injury.

The unemployment allowance paid is equal to the Standard Benift Rate, based on average wages during the last four completed contributed periods.

The injured persons and their family members are also entitled to medical care for a period of six months from the date of unemployment.
