Police detain anti-quota agitators in front of rashtrapati Bhawan
New Delhi, Dec 24 (UNI) Several anti-quota activists were today detained by the police when they staged a demonstration outside the Rashtrapati Bhawan, demanding President A P J Abdul Kalam intervene against the OBC Reservation Bill.
''A handful of activists were picked up and brought to the police station,'' Deputy Commissioner of Police Anand Mohan said, adding that they were later let-off by the police in the evening, he added.
In a memorandum to Mr Kalam, the activists urged his personal intervention to stop the enactment of the ''controversial'' Bill.
Parliament had passed a legislation providing for 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in higher courses at government-aided educational institutions in the recently-concluded Winter session.
