No instant formula can ensure peace: Prof Mattoo

Jammu, Dec 25 (UNI) Jammu University Vice-Chancellor Prof Amitabh Mattoo has said no instant formula or constitutional remedy can ensure peace in the trouble-torn state and the forces of subversion can be isolated only through strengthening the institutions.

Addressing a meet on 'peace building through institution building in J&K' at Press Club of Jammu yesterday, Prof Mattoo, who is an expert on international affairs, underlined the role of institutions in peace building by engaging civil society and empowering the stakeholders.

He said peace was not possible without investing in the institutions and only strong institutions can marginalise the forces which create violence and destruction.

Citing example of Europeon Union, which witnessed much bloodshed till mid of 20th century, Prof Mattoo said it were the institutions which created conditions for peace building.

However, on the other hand, he added, SAARC failed in achieving the results because of inadequate investment in the institutions here.

Prof Mattoo also had a word of advice for the media to which he suggested to see beyond news and shortsighted views. ''Only then we will be able to contribute towards society and satisfy our inner conscience,'' he added.
