NCW member visits central prison, interactes with inmates
Visakhapatnam, Dec 25 (UNI) Member of the National Commission for Women Nirmala Venkatesh today paid a surprise visit to the Central jail and inspected various accomodations housing the inmates.
After meeting the prison officials and inmates, she told reporters that she was immensely pleased with the suggestions made by the women prisoners.
Ms Nirmala took part in Christmas celebration inside the jail premises.
She said the commission was urged the review of laws relating to rape cases in the country, including rigorous and strict implementation of non-bailable sections.
The Commission wanted setting up of Fast Track courts for speedy trial of rape cases within a month to prevent witnessess from turning hostile, she informed.
The commission had submitted a proposal to the Supreme Court and the Union Government for proper rehabilitation of rape victims besides recommending payment from ranging from Rs three lakh to five lakh, she added.
Another proposal had been made in coordination with the Ministry of Overseas, making entry of name of the spouse mandatory in passport in view of large number of failed NRI marriages and exploitation of women. A workshop would be held at Hyderabad on January 22 in connection with NRI related marriages, she added.
