Punjab to set up cancer institute in Malwa belt

Mansa, Dec 24 (UNI) Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh today said the government would soon set up a Cancer Hospital and Research Institute at Talwandi Sabo to provide best possible treatment to patients in the Malwa belt.

The Malwa belt has high incidence of cancer cases due to poor quality of groundwater.

Addressing news persons at the end of the fourth leg of his 'Vikas Yatra' at Jhunir near here, he said the government was seriously contemplating to undertake this super speciality project after realising the plight of the cancer patients who had to go to far off places for treatment.

Referring to the problem of female foeiticide, Capt Singh said he was in favour of equating this crime with murder. He reiterated his firm resolve that same quantum of punishment should be handed out to an accused convicted of murder or of female foeticide, because both were heinous crimes.

He hoped that stringent steps would go a long way in curbing this social menace and would act as a deterrent to reverse the adverse sex ratio in Punjab.
