Chilly Christmas eve in Delhi as mercury plummets to 6.1 Deg C
New Delhi, Dec 24 (UNI) It was a chilly Christmas eve for Delhiites as the mercury in the capital plummeted to the season's lowest of 6.1 Degree Celsius, thus putting a dampener on the partying and the festival revelry.
The drop in minimum temperature to 6.1 degrees C, two degrees below normal, from 8.2 degree C yesterday brought about a severe chill in the air. This is the lowest temperature recorded in Delhi this winter season.
The maximum also dropped to 22.3 Degree C, from 22.7 Degree C yesterday.
The weatherman attributed the sharp fall in mercury today to snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Uttaranchal and rain in Punjab and Haryana in the last few days under the influence of a fresh western disturbance.
Even though the weathermen have forecast that night temperature over the plains of northwest India would witness a slight rise during the next two days, they have, at the same time, predicted a fall in night temperature in the region in the post-Christmas period due to another phase of snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal and Uttaranchal and rainfall in Punjab and Haryana during the next 24 hours.
The weatherman have forecast a minimum temperature of six degrees C tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the fog enveloping the Delhi skyline over the last few days dissipated today. Even though there was slight fog in the morning, the visibility levels were 500 m which is considered normal.
A spokesperson of the Airports authority of India said the visibility levels at the international airport were normal with the result that there were no flight delays due to fog.
During the next 24 hours, the met office has forecast a mainly clear sky in Delhi with the weather likely to become partly cloudy towards the evening. Tehy have also forecast possibility of slight fog or mist in the morning hours.
