UDF, LDF councillors jostle each other in Kochi Corporation

Kochi, Dec 23 (UNI) Councillors of the ruling LDF and the opposition UDF nearly came to blows in the Kochi Corporation today as the irate Opposition members tried to gherao Mayor Mercy Williams on the issue of waste disposal in the city.

As UDF members tried to surround Mayor Mercy William's podium, the LDF councillors charged at them and tried to push them back. The proceedings had to be adjourned abruptly following the fracas.

One UDF councillor had to be taken to the General Hospital following the altercation, reports said.

The waste disposal in the city has been a bone of contention as the proposed Brahmapuram waste disposal plant has not got off the ground. The Navy has objected to the Corporation dumping the waste on Wellingdon Island due to apprehensions of bird hits at the Naval air base nearby.

While Prof Mercy Williams had charged the Opposition councillors with not cooperating with her in finding a solution to the issue, the UDF councillors accused the Mayor of inefficiency in resolving the matter.
