I dont trust PM's promises on Lanka: Fernandes
Chennai, Dec 23: Former Union Minister and Janata Dal (U) national president George Fernandes today said he did not have any faith in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's promise on solving the problems of Sri Lankan Tamils.
Speaking to media after participating in a demonstration organised by the Nadar Peravai here in support of Sri Lankan Tamils, he said 'the people of Sri Lanka, especially the Tamils, are expecting a lot from India, but the Centre is not acting upon their expectations'.
He said the Tamils in the island nation were going through a tough time, adding that at all levels they were at the receiving end.
''It is time for us to understand their problem and take steps to mitigate their suffering'', he added.
He said right from the beginning he was supporting the cause of Tamils and assured his continued support to solve the strife.
Nadar Peravai state president A Naryanan urged the Centre to take steps to protect the lives and property of Tamils in the island nation. The Centre should recognise their struggle for the formation of Tamil Eelam, he added.
He also urged the Centre not to extend help to the Sri Lankan Government, especially military assistance, as it would be used against the Tamils.
Condemning attacks on Tamils by the Sri Lankan Army, he called for a halt.
He urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi to call for a state-wide bandh to condemn the killings.
