Congress to field more women in Punjab polls: Bahuguna

Hoshiarpur, Dec 23 (UNI) To encourage women to participate in the country's political process, Congress will field more women candidates in Punjab assembly polls, All India Mahila Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said.

Ms Rita Bahuguna, while addressing a rally of the Punjab Mahila Congress at Ahiyapur (Tanda), 35 kms from here, last evening, said the Congress was strongly supporting the Women Reservation Bill, which would be introduced in the Parliament's budget session and was expected to become a law next year.

The Bill would ensure 33 per cent reservation for women in both the houses of Parliament and the state assemblies, she said.

The Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had taken many steps to ensure uplift of women in the country.

She also lauded Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, claiming maximum development of Punjab had taken place during his regime and appealed to public to strengthen the hands of Congress leadership to make the nation stronger.
