Ambedkar's statue vandalised in Azamgarh

Azamgarh, Dec 23 (UNI) Tension gripped this district after the statue of Dalit icon Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was found desecrated today.

Police said the incident took place in Mahabalpatti village under Captainganj police station area, where unidentified miscreants had vandalised Dr Ambedkar's statue last night.

The incident agitated the villagers, who blocked the Azamgarh-Faizabad highway affecting the flow of traffic for couple of hours. The mob could be pacified only after the police got the damaged statue repaired.

Meanwhile, local police has been deployed to avoid any violence.

A case was registered and so far, no arrest was made.

Earlier, similar incidents have taken place in Kanpur, Allahabad and Mainpuri districts of Uttar Pradesh, which were followed by several protests by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) activists.
