Akalis ask EC to impose code of conduct in Punjab

Chandigarh, Dec 23 (UNI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today described the transfers of Deputy Commissioner of Moga, many SDMs, ADCs and other senior officers of the state as illgeal, unethical, unjustified and politically motivated.

The party has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to intervene and impose model code of conduct with immediate effect.

The party's Secretary Daljit Singh Cheema in a faxed complaint to the ECI demanded that all transfers done by the state government ignoring Commission's guidelines should be cancelled and strict action should be taken against the state government.

In the complaint to ECI, a copy of which has also been sent to the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer, the SAD alleged, the new Moga Deputy Commissioner S K Sharma is well known for his proximity to the Chief Minister. Mr Sharma is the brother of Mayor of Patiala, the home town of the CM, the complaint stated.

Raising serious doubts over the timing of these transfers, the SAD apprehended that the Congress party wanted to avail the services of these officers during elections. The party demanded that to win the confidence of the people the Commission should reverse all these transfers.
