Kolkata, Dec 22 (UNI) In a significant development over the Singur issue, West Bengal Women's Commission today recommended the state Government to put an end to the resentment among villagers over land acquisition, while Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee continued her hunger strike for the 19th day sticking to the demand that the plots of unwilling farmers be given back.

Expressing concern over the situation at Singur where the Tatas'small car factory is scheduled to come up, the Commission also wanted that the Government order a probe into the allegation of police atrocities on the women of Singur and punish those found guilty.

Meanwhile, to counter the allegation of Ms Mamata Banerjee that a sizable chunk of farm land at Singur had been forcibly acquired, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said the Government would release a set of documents on land acquisition very soon.

After a seven-member team of the Women's Commission visited Singur on Wednesday, its Chairperson Jashodhara Bagchi said in a statement today that a section of women villagers were '' highly aggrieved'' since their land had been taken away without consent.

The women told the team members that they would protect land, which was source of their livelihood, at the cost of their life.

They also alleged that police had manhandled and abused a number of women who had tried to resist fencing of the acquired land on December 2.

On the other hand, those who had willingly given their land alleged to the Commission that they were being attacked, tortured and terrorised by the people opposed to land acquisition.

'' In view of the situation we recommend that the Government start process to put an end to the atmosphere of resentment and disbelief among the people in some areas of Singur,'' the statement said.

Speaking from her dharna manch, Ms Banerjee reiterated that she would not withdraw hunger strike and hold any talks with anybody before the unwilling land owners got back their plots. She alleged that about 50 per cent of the total land acquired for the project had been forcibly taken away from farmers.

'' Unless my demand is fulfilled it is meaningless to write letters calling for an end to the hunger strike,'' she said without naming the Chief Minister, who had sent his second letter to the Trinamool leader yesterday pleading for a dialogues.
