Agartala, Dec 22 (UNI) Tripura Renewable Energry Development Agency (TREDA) has identified 56 remote villages of Jampui hills, Dasda and Damchara blocks, mainly hilly terrains of the state, to supply solar power lamps with a cost of Rs 2 crore.

Already 9,000 solar lanterns had been distributed to those areas and an equal number would be given shortly to the villagers. For this an order for more 15,000 solar lanterns had been placed.

This project was aiming to provide light in all villages by 2012.

The areas, identified where where harnessing of convensional energy was not possible, said an official of the TREDA.

The department supplied solar lanterns to the villagers at a highly subsidised rate, the officer said adding that in case a beneficiary is in BPL list, he has to cough up Rs 500, though the market price is nearly Rs 3000. And Rs 700 to Rs 1000 for others.

Recently such solar powered lanterns were provided to many villagers of North district, close to Mizoram border.
