Police launches high-tech Computerised Identification System

New Delhi, Dec 22 (UNI) In a major modernisation effort, the Delhi police has installed finger-print based Computerised Remote Identification of Suspects System (CRIS), allowing access to internal network of over 1.6 lakh finger print records of criminals.

Launching the system, Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul said the system can be accessed to search finger prints from the Finger Print Bureau of the crime branch and nine police stations -- one in each police district.

''Identification of suspects will become much easier with the system,'' he added.

The CRIS picks up finger prints using a bio-metric sensor and transmits them to the Finger Print Bureau where they are matched and information re-transmitted to remote terminals.

''It does not involve ink for taking finger prints and is based on optical live scan technology, producing results without any manual intervention," Dr Paul said.

''The speed, simplicity and accessibility of the new system will help us save time and serve the citizens better,'' he added.

The Police Commissioner said a new server has been installed at the Finger Print Bureau with the connectivity on existing network of the Common Integrated Police Application (CIPA) through a NIC server.

The system can display information within 2 to 4 minutes of a feeding fingerprints in the input device.
