NRI seeks police assistance to recover his loan

Chennai, Dec 22: A Dubai-based NRI had sought police assistance for recovering a loan amount of Rs 15 lakh from a businessman, who was his neighbour in Dubai but settled in Thanjavur District of Tamil Nadu.

The NRI A T Suresh of suburban Alandur, working in Dubai, in his complaint to the Director General of Police and City Police Commissioner, a copy of which was made available to the media here yesterday, pointed out that Ponnusamy Gunasekaran hailing from Pattukkottai in Thanjavur District was running a saloon at Dubai and developed friendship with him.

On Gunasekaran's request, he said, he gave Rs 15 lakhs to him in September 2004 for constructing a shopping complex in Tamil Nadu, against which Gunasekaran gave a blank cheque and a promissary note written on a stamp paper as evidence for loan obtained from him.

Gunasekaran, however, failed to repay the loan as scheduled, and despite repeated requests did not acted. Following this, Mr Suresh had filed a writ petition, seeking his arrest, before a judicial court at Dubai, in which he was convicted.

Gunasekaran, after learning that the court verdict would go against him, managed to escape from here and settled at Pattukkottai.

Thereafter, Mr Suresh made several attempts in person and through correspondence to get his money back from Gunasekaran, but his efforts went in vain.

He urged the police to take necessary action to get the repayment of his loan from Gunasekaran.

Enquiries revealed at Police Headquarters said they could not interfere in this crime directly, since the transaction took place at Dubai. Unless otherwise an official direction from authorities concerned at Dubai or Indian High Commission emerges, the state police is not in a position to accept this complaint, Mr Suresh was informed accordingly.
