No newspapers hit stands in Manipur to protest attack on Editor

Imphal, Dec 22 (UNI) Manipur today went without a daily as all newspaper houses stopped printing last night to protest an attempt on the life of Paonam Labango, Editor and Publisher of the Kangla Pao, an eveninger on December 20 night by unknown gunmen.

The mediapersons had staged a sit-in-protest yesterday to condemn the indiscriminate firing on Labango.

The journalists will also meet this evening to discuss the sporadic attacks on scribes by unknown persons.

However, the journalists have resumed their normal activities from today.

The Editors Forum, Manipur (EFM) and All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) and other organisations have condemned the attack and have urged all to respect the freedom of the press.

Mr Labango claimed he had received a threat two months ago over a news item. He was asked not to publish it but he refused straightforward.

He had a dramatic escape when gunmen fired at him but he managed to drive away at break-neck speed and escape from his attackers, he said.
