Port Blair, Dec 22: About 45 marooned Bangladeshi men were rescued after their vessel sunk near Dugong Creek in remote Little Andaman island of Andaman and Nicobar island chain, police said today.

"They were in fact 49, of whom one is missing while three died of hunger," Superintendent of Police of South Andaman Jaspal Singh said today.

He said these Bangladeshi nationals lost the direction following a snag in their engine dinghy since early of this month. "They entered in the exclusive economic zone of India in Andaman Sea of Bay of Bengal at about 0700 hrs yesterday and soon they were spotted by the Andaman Police," said Mr Singh.

Dugong Creek is a restricted area inhabited by stone-age primitive tribe-Onge.

Mr Singh said that if the apprehended foreigners were found to be in distress since their vessel almost broken, they would be treated according to the International Maritime Law and would be sent back to their country or else the law would take its own course.

Indian Coast Guard sources confirmed that these marooned people had nothing with them to survive in remote islands.

According to priliminary information their engine dinghy was damaged near Dugong Creek which forced them to abandon the vessel and swam to the nearby tribal islands. The tribals located them and informed the police in Little Andaman.

Mr Singh told media that all the 45 Bangladeshi nationals were brought to Port Blair last evening after being gvien first aid and food.
