Couple, son held for torturing orphan

Chennai, Dec 22 (UNI) Police have arrested three persons of a family for allegedly torturing an 11-year-old inmate of an orphanage at suburb Redhills, last night.

Mr Ramanathan, wife Seethalakhsmi and son Karthikeyen, who were running the orphanage were arrested, police said.

Police said, they used to employ the inmates, numbering 19, for their personal works including cleaning the house.

One Pandiyan, a standard six student, was entrusted to clean the toilets. However, due to ill health, the boy did not turn up for the work.

The accused allegedly poured hot water on the boy. The other inmates admitted him to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital here, with burns.

On Information, Maduravoyal police went to the hospital and obtained statement from the boy and arrested Ramanathan and his family members and remanded them into judicial custody, police added.
