Veeru and Jai in Ramu's Sholay are natives of Latur

Mumbai, Dec 21 (UNI) Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is leaving no stone unturned to make his version of 1975 classic 'Sholay' different.

The characters of Jai and Veeru, played by newcomer Prashant Raj and Ajay Devgan respectively are 'Marathi Manoos' (Maharashtrians) and natives of Latur, a town in the Marathwada region, which is the hometown of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and union Home MInister Shivraj Patil.

Ramesh Sippy's Sholay was based in North India while Ramu's is Mumbai centric.

Earlier, Ramu had announced that he had cast Sushmita Sen to play Jaya Bachchan's character from the original while Nisha Kothari will essay Hema Malini's role.

Sushmita's character is called 'Devi' while in the original Jaya was Radha. Nisha is an autorickshaw driver while Hema Malini was Basanti and rode a Tonga.

In the original, the two women had never met while in 'Ram Gopal Varma ke Sholay', they are best friends.
