Catapult economy with scientific advancement: Azad

Jammu, Dec 21 (UNI) Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad today called for equal opportunity of education to all as it is of paramount importance in seeking all round socio-economic development and creation of peaceful and conducive atmosphere.

Speaking at a function in Kargil, Mr Azad said equal opportunity for education should be provided to all irrespective of caste, creed, colour, religion and regions, in all three region of the state.

Mr Azad vowed to seek development and progress of backward and far-flung areas like Kargil and Leh alongwith other parts of the state.

''Our focus is on catapulting development of hitherto left under developed areas. We have put in place wide ranging plans to address the grievances and problems of people living in far-flung and backward areas of the state,'' he said.

Mr Azad said the chain of development schemes launched in various sectors especially in education and technology fields to bring under its ambit all rural and far-off areas are yielding fruitful results and students are taking best advantage of facilities being provided by the government.

''It is for this fact that our boys and girls from Leh, Kargil and other places are in front line in seeking high pursuits of education and technology,'' the chief minister added.

He said the government's firm commitment for equitable development of all areas is evident by the enactment of legislation providing for constitution of finance commission to address the requirements of backward and far-off area and earmark their share in the resources and development.

Mr Azad said this will not only help to promote education but give fillip to all economic activities in these areas. ''This is the indication of brighter future for Leh and Kargil,'' he added.

On the occasion, Mr Azad announced a grant of Rs 50 lakh for construction of hostel for Kargil students and said that ''Apna Ghar'' institute providing accommodation would be encouraged by way of support.

This institute provides accommodation to the poor students of Kargil families who have been affected by the Kargil war.
