BHU resident doctors strike work over lathicharge on medicos

Varanasi, Dec 21 (UNI) The anti-quota stir on the Benaras Hindu University (BHU) campus here today gathered further momentum with resident doctors striking work at the Sir Sunderlal Hospital (SSU) over last evening's lathicharge on the agitating medical students by security personnel.

Resident Doctors Association-Youth for Equality convenor Kamal Gupta said irked over last evening lathicharge by BHU proctorial board personnel on anti-reservation medical students, the resident doctors went on a 24-hour strike bringing to halt medical services at the SSU hospital.

Hospital authorities, however, said the medical services were only slightly affected at the hospital.

The medical students, who are boycotting classes over the 27 per cent OBC reservation in institutions of higher education continued to block the main entrance of the central university.

''We will end the road blockade only when punitive action is taken against the security personnel, who lathicharged the medical students protesting peacefully on the campus,'' Dr Gupta maintained.

Meanwhile, Chief Proctor of BHU S K Singh told newspersons that the deadlock between the agitating medicos and the university administration will be ended amicably by this evening.
