Attempt on Editor by gunmen, scribes stage protest in Manipur

Imphal, Dec 21 (UNI) Unidentifed gunmen made an abortive attempt to kill Editor and Publisher of the Kangla Pao, an eveninger of Manipuri language, Paonam Labango, last night, police said today.

The gunmen fired at Labango when he was coming out from his office at around 2110 hours. Fortunately not a single bullet hit the Editor and the gunmen fled immediatly taking cover in the darkness.

To protest the attack, the media community in Manipur under the aegis of the Editors Forum, Manipur (EFM) and All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) today organised a sit-in here.

The EFM has called a state-wide cease work today. There will be no newspapers tomorrow, it added.

The EFM also expressed concern over the repeated attacks on journalists in the recent past. Many journalists including Editors have been killed in Manipur by the insurgents.

An emergency meeting of editors was called last midnight to take stock of the situation. The media organisations strongly condemned the attack.
