Haryana becomes first to draft state police act

Chandigarh, Dec 20 (UNI) The Haryana Government has become the first state to draft the state police act in compliance with the directions of the Supreme Court to streamline the functioning of the Police Department.

The state cabinet, which met here today under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda approved the Haryana Police Ordinance 2006 as the State Legislature is not in Session.

At present, police functioning in Haryana is governed under the Police Act 1861 and Punjab Police Rules 1934 made hereunder.

The Police Act 1861 and the Rules are pre-independence laws and had become out-dated, Mr Hooda said.

The Supreme Court has directed the Central as well as the State Governments to frame new Police Act with a view to ensure the functioning of the Police to be more democratic, efficient, responsive and accountable.

There shall be one Police Service for the State constituted by the State Government under the Ordinance. It would also include the Indian Police Service, Mr Hooda said.
