Gaganjit, Drag flicker Jugraj shine in Romesh Hockey

Jalandhar, Dec 20 (UNI) Superb hat-trick (four goals) by Olympian Gaganajit Singh enabled Sher-e-Jalandhar to rout Corps of Signals by a maasive 7-0 in the nineth Romesh Chander Memorial Hockey Tournament while equally good performance by drag flicker Jugraj Singh (four goals) gave Punjab Police a 7-2 win against Rail Coach Factory (RCF) here today.

In another league match of the tournament played at the Burlton Park here today, Border Security Force (BSF) downed Punjab and Sindh Bank by 3-2.

Olympian Ganganjit Singh's four-goal feat paved the way for star studded Sher-e-Jalandhar's massive 7-0 win over Corps of Signals.

The match was reduced to one sided affair in which the signal men got less chances to assert.

Sher-e-Jalandhar team which is gearing itself up for the Premier Hockey League (PHL) tournament had good shooting time and scored all seven goals on field moves. Besides Ganganjit's four goals, two goals were posted by upcoming player Jarnail Singh and one by Harbhajan Singh.

Another star, drag flicker Jugraj also gave spectacular performance for Punjab Police in its outing against RCF today.

Jugraj displayed well his skill and contributed four goals for the team.

While Jugraj scored three goals through penalty corner coversions, one was scored on a penalty stroke. Amit Singh, Gabbar Singh and Jagbir Singh also scored one goal each for the police team while Roop singh and Harbir Singh posted one goal each for RCF.

The match of the day between BSF and Punjab and Sindh Bank was played at a fast pace and both teams fought keenly to have an edge.

BSF took the lead in the 10th minute through a fine field goal by Mukhjinder Singh and Varinder Jit Singh consolidated it with one more goal from a penalty stroke in the 26th minute.

Three minutes later, bankmen also struck when Tasvarjit Singh scored a goal from penalty corner. One goal each were scored by both teams in the second half and scorers were Daler Singh for the Bank and Varinderjit Singh for BSF.

The Punjab and Sindh Bank, which was playing with its second string team in the absence of seven regular star players, lacked in experience and not only wasted five penalty corners but also gave two penalty strokes to the rival team due to their indiscipline.
