Rajay Sabha witnesses female fury over women reservation bill

New Delhi, Dec 19 (UNI) Female fury rocked the Rajya Sabha on the last day of the winter session as women members gave vent to their ire over non-introduction of the bill providing reservation to them in Parliament and state legislatures.

''Ladies you should not do it. What are you doing?'' Deputy Chairperson K Rehman Khan exclaimed as women members, cutting across party lines, rose from their seats shouting at the top of their voices. Some even rushed to the well of the House, wanting to express their protest over the delay in the introduction of the Women Reservation Bill.

Chaos and confusion prevailed in the House, forcing Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan to adjourn the proceedings twice.

As soon as the Zero Hour began and BJP Member Sushma Swaraj stood up to speak on the issue, women members from other parties, including Prema Kariappa of the Congress, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M), N P Durga of the Telugu Desam, got on their feet asking permission from the chair to express their views on the issue.

However, Mr Khan told them that their notice has been rejected and they should listen to Ms Swaraj who was going to speak on the same issue.

At this, the agitated members started protesting against the ruling and demanded an explanation for the rejection.

Mr Khan said the Chair did not have to give any explantion for not accepting a notice, which further infuriated the members.

All the appeals of the Chair and Ms Swaraj that she should be allowed to speak went in vain and the din continued.

Finally, realising that the women members were in no mood to relent, the Deputy Chairman announced adjournment of the House at around 1220 hrs till 1230 hrs.
