Oppn leader asks Governor to convene Legislature session

Bangalore, Dec 18 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council H K Patil today appealed to the Governor to immediately convene the Legislature session either on December 20 or 21 to touch the mandatory 60 sittings in a calendar year and avoid setting a bad precedent.

Talking to reporters here, he said he had written a letter to Governor T N Chaturvedi, appealing him to take steps to ensure the rule of law by preventing the Government from violating the laws.

The Karnataka Conduct of Government Business in the State Legislature Act 2005 imposed an obligation on the Government to recommend summoning of the State Legislature and conduct business for a minimum of 60 days in a calendar year.

In 2006, the State Legislature had sat for only 51 days, Mr Patil pointed out, adding that it was unfortunate to note that no attempts were being made by the Government to recommend convening of the session for the remaining nine days.

''While a Government deliberately takes a position to flout the law, naturally one has to look up to the Governor, who is to protect and defend the Constitution and the law,'' he said.
