LS passes bill to improve service condition of CAT members
New Delhi, Dec 18 (UNI) The Lok Sabha today passed a bill seeking to hike the age of retirement of the Chairman and members of the Central Administrative Tribunal and improve their service conditions.
Accordingly, the retirement age of the Chairman would be increased to 68 from 65 and that of members to 65 from the present 62.
Minister of State for Personnel and Training Suresh Pachauri said the retirement age of members of the CAT was fixed as 62 when the reitrement age of government servants was 58. Since the retirement age of government servants was hiked to 60, it was necessary to increase the retirement age of CAT Chairman and members in order to attract more suitable and efficient officers to serve in the tribunal.
Members expressed concern over the pendency of huge number of cases before the CAT, which was set up to deliver expeditious justice for civil servants.
In this context, they suggested appointment of more members to ensure speedy disposal of cases.
