JACC withdraws 72-hour road blockade in Meghalaya
Shillong, Dec 18 (UNI) The Joint Action Co-ordination Committee (JACC) today called off its 72-hour road blockade in Meghalaya following the state government's assurance to look into their demand.
The proposed 72-hour road blockade in Meghalaya's East, West, Jaintia Hills and Ri-Bhoi district was supposed to start from 0600 hrs on December 20.
Last week, the JACC, a conglomeration of various transport associations, imposed the blockade after the Rymbai-led government failed to decide on the new rate of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) as suggested by them.
The state government had fixed Rs 1,900 for the registration plates, while the JACC suggested the rate of Rs 825 for heavy vehicle and Rs 425 to Rs 460 for small and light vehicles to implement the HSRP.
'' We have decided to withdraw our agitation following the government assurance to look into the matter and public appeal to withdraw the blockade, '' JACC spokesman Augustine Shanpru told reporters here after a meeting with Chief Minister J D Rymbai and Transport Minister Manirul Islam Sarkar.
Earlier, Mr Rymbai told reporters here that the government had assured the JACC delegation to negotiate with the concerned firm to reduce the price of HSRP.
