Human cloning can create reservoir of spare parts: Singh

Varanasi, Dec 18 (UNI) Eminent genetic scientist and Director of Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad Lalji Singh today said human cloning held the potential of leading to a reservoir of human spare parts.

Addressing a day-long workshop on 'Bioethics' organised at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) here, Dr Singh, considered to be the father of DNA finger-printing in the country, said that human cloning could result in wide-ranging benefits to mankind.

Cloning humans could be a boon for the study of ageing process, help in organ transplant besides helping the production of vital pharmaceuticals, he said.

Dr Singh further said that cloning also held the key for production of stem cells for treatment of acute brain damage, besides creating a pool of human spare parts helpful for patients suffering from organ failure.

The most valuable help that human cloning can give is in the field of combating variegated disorders, which were presently treatable but not curable. These range from disorders of blood cells, bone cells, cartilege cells, liver cells, skin cells and retinal cells.

Human cloning can also tackle the problem of depletion of wildlife by multiplication of animal species which were on the verge of extinction, Dr Singh maintained.
