HC dismisses PIL to stop DK, HMK agitation on Periyar statue
Chennai, Dec 18 (UNI) Madras High Court today dismissed a Public Interest Litigation(PIL) petition, seeking to restrain the Tamil Nadu Government from permitting Dravida Kazhagam(DK) and Hindu Makkal Katchi(HMK) organisations from conducting any sort of demonstration and mass gathering, thereby creating disturbances to the common people.
Dismissing the PIL filed by Indian Makkal Manram(IMM) founder-president V R Krishna Kumar, a division bench comprising acting Chief Justice, A P Shah and Mr Justice K Chandru said this was not a fit case to invoke article 226 of the Constitution and directed the petitioner to approach the Home Secretary and Director-General of Police in this regard.
In his petition, Mr Krishna Kumar submitted that since December a incident, by some anti-social elements in the form of destruction of 'Periyar Statue' in Srirangam, subsequent events, were purely for the benefit of a ''few so-called politically-affiliated parties.'' In the process, life of common public had been affected with these incidents creating fear and panic among the public at large.
