CBI court convicts four persons in bank fraud case
Chennai, Dec 18 (UNI) The Special court for CBI cases, Madurai, has convicted four people, including a former officer of the nationalised Canara Bank, for defrauding the bank to the tune of Rs 77 lakh by opening fictitious account and presenting bogus outstation cheques in that account.
A press release from the CBI Economic Offences Wing, Chennai said the accused were Raja Gafur, John Fernando, Mrs Sharmila and S Arumugam, former officer of the Canara Bank, Tuticorin Beach Road branch.
The special court judge convicted and sentenced Raj Gafur to seven years rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs 35 lakh, while he awarded five years RI and a fine of Rs 10 lakh to John Fernando, 3 years RI and a fine of Rs 10 lakh to Mrs Sharmila and 3 years RI and a fine of Rs one lakh to Arumugam, the release added.
