Silva century helps Sri Lanka to huge lead in Wellington

SYDNEY, Dec 17 (Reuters) Sri Lanka extended their lead to 419 runs at lunch on the third day of the second and final test match against New Zealand in Wellington today.

After rain delayed the start by 40 minutes, Chamara Silva notched his first century in only his second test as the Sri Lankans move from their overnight 225 for five to 281 for six.

Silva, who made a pair on debut in the opening test in Christchurch last week, smoothly added the 31 runs to his overnight score to reach three figures in 145 balls, including 12 boundaries.

The only wicket to fall in the session was that of Prasanna Jayawardene, who skied a short Chris Martin delivery into the hands of substitute fielder Stu Mills for 37 having added 94 with Silva for the sixth wicket.

Silva was unbeaten on 111 at the break with Chaminda Vaas on nine. Sri Lanka made 268 in their first innings before the hosts were skittled for just 130 yesterday.

New Zealand won the first test by five wickets.
