Rohtak chosen for launch of national agriculture project

Rohtak, Dec 17 (UNI) Rohtak district has been chosen for launching the Agricultural Resources Information System (AgRIS), a pilot project in the country to provide information to the farmers on the latest technique of agriculture in their own language.

The project is to be executed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) in collaboration with the District Administration and it is sponsored by the state Department of Agriculture and Cooperation.

Deputy Commissioner R S Doon who held a days workshop on working out the details of this project here today, said the aim of AgRIS was to identify the village level agricultural issues of the district in general and dairy farming in particular. It would help in wider dissemination of agriculture related information to the farmers so as to make farming a profitable occupation.

He said the latest information about agriculture research and about the type of crops to be sown by the farmers would be made available to the farmers so that they can get maximum profits out of it. Mr Doon said for successful implementation of the project, resource persons would be identified. He assured all help to the NIC officials in implementation of this project.

In the workshop, the Deputy Director of NIC, Dr M Moni said once the AgRIS project came out to be successful in Rohtak district it would be implemented in rest of the districts in the country. He said the farmers remained devoid of the latest agriculture researches and they followed the old traditional techniques of cultivation.

Dr Moni said the farmers were not able to get benefits of the researches and other modern techniques because of lack of proper information. The AgRIS project would help in dissemination of this information which the farmer needs and that too in his own language, he added.
