Dawson calls for equitable distribution of benefits of globalisation

Dharwad, Dec 17 (UNI) British management-expert Dame Sandra Dawson, while stressing the need for equitable distribution of the benefits of globalisation, said it was of paramount importance in order to sustain the tempo of economic integration process.

Delivering a special lecture on 'India and global economy' under the auspices of Dr Pavate Foundation and Karnataka University here yesterday, Ms Dawson of the University of Cambridge said expectations of the people were increasing. If mechanisms were not developed to share the economic benefits, it would lead to more frustrations, she warned.

Asserting that globalisation was not a new phenomenon, she noted that it started with the developments in the field of science and technologie. The new communication technologies have speed up the process of capital movement.''This great speed has created enormous opportunities to the developing economies like India and the country should seize the opportunities.'' ''India is extraordinary in many ways and has the capabilities to accelerate the growth rate,''' she hoped and said the business enterprises must evolve innovative way to accelerate the growth and should be collaborative through extensive networking to help as many people as possible.

''Competitive edge is fine but it should not ignore societal responsibilities,'' she said.

Dr V R Panchamukhi, a renowned economist, who also spoke on the occasion, said India should integrate itself with the global economy.

However, the negative aspects of it should also be tackled tactfully.

Over emphasis on growth without taking into account the development needs of a majority of population was very dangerous.

The real message of globalisation should be the sacrifice of few for the benefit of many and should not be otherwise, he opined.
