AGP to hold demonstration in front of Parliament
Guwahati, Dec 17 (UNI) The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), will stage a demonstration in front of Parliament tomorrow to highlight different problems faced faced by Asom, which needed urgent attention of the Union government.
AGP president Brindabon Goswami today informed that though the party had earlier submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, seeking the Centre's intervention in finding a solution to these problems, including ULFA issue, but the Union government's response to these remained lukewarm.
''As the Union government didn't do anything to solve the problems of the state raised by us, we are now compelled to take recourse to agitational path to highlight those in front of the nation and to start with we will demonstrate before the Sansad Bhawan tomorrow,'' Mr Goswami said.
The AGP leader said the party would try to garner support of ''like-minded'' parties like Samajwadi Party (SP), Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the CPI and CPI(M).
The demands, being harped on by the regional party, included early solution to the ULFA insurgency problem through political dialogue, repeal of the ''draconian'' Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, 1958, urgent steps to prevent proliferation of ISI activities in the state, implementation of the Assam Accord, updating the National Registrar of Citizens (NRC) to March, 1971 to facilitate detection and deportation of illegal migrants as per Assam Accord, Central assistance to provide succour to about 30 lakh drought-hit farmers in the state and early solution to boundary disputes with neighbouring states, including Nagaland.
