Why did Cong not act on Gopal Singh Com report on Muslims:BJP

New Delhi, Dec 16 (UNI) The BJP today demanded an explanation from the Congress as to why it did not act upon the Gopal Singh Committee report, which was not very different from the Justice Rajinder Sachar Committee report.

BJP Spokesman Prakash Javadekar said the Congress would be ''deeply disappointed'' if it thought that the Muslims would support them enbloc if they are placated with slogans like 'Muslims first'.

''The Congress move will boomerang once the Muslims realise the party's vote bank politics. It had done nothing for the Muslims for 50 long years when they were at the Centre. Similarly, even the Communists were in power in West Bengal for the last 30 years but failed to work for their cause. These two parties cannot wash their hands off the responsibility for the present state of affairs of Muslims in the country,'' he added.

He said the Congress which appointed Mr Gopal Singh to study the status of Muslims in the country two decades ago did not act on the findings of the report. Instead, they were now pretending as if they would do everything for uplifting the community.

Mr Javadekar said unlike the Congress party, the BJP was interested in the overall welfare of the entire backward communities and not just one religion.

It would not have harmed if the Sachar Committee were asked to look into the status of nomadic tribes or those living in the hills instead of just Muslims. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was one such attempt which focussed on imparting quality education at minimal cost leaving no section untouched, he said.

There was incentive for the parents to send their children to school, he said and added if 95 per cent of Muslim children dropped out of school, the government should take the blame.
