BSNL targets 50 mn broadband connections

Chennai, Dec 16 (UNI) The public sector Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which has declared 2007 as the 'Broadband year', has set a target of 50 million broadband connections in the next fiscal.

Of this five lakh connections would be in Tamil Nadu, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A K Sinha said today.

He was speaking at a function to commemorate BSNL's 20 lakh mobile phone connections in the State and to lay the foundation stone for BSNL's new administrative building here.

Union IT and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran, who was also present, said the BSNL had grown tremendously during the last two years, when compared to private sector, which began its operations way back in 1994.

BSNL had targetted to achieve 25 crore mobile phone connections by 2007 and had already touched the 18 crore mark this year.

The new building, foundation stone for which was laid by Tamil Nadu Local Administration Minister M K Stalin, would house all the 20 circles of the BSNL and would be ready in the next 18 months with an investment of Rs 96 crore.
