Test for Taiwan's Chen as first lady goes on trial

TAIPEI, Dec 15 (Reuters) A trial begins today of Taiwan's First Lady on corruption charges, kicking off a process that could eventually topple President Chen Shui-bian who has vowed to resign if his wife is found guilty.

First lady Wu Shu-chen was charged last month with embezzlement and receipt forgery stemming from her alleged misuse of 14.8 million taiwanese dollar from a special government fund.

Her trial is expected to open today with a preparatory hearing on Friday, the first since her indictment, in a Taipei District Court room filled with spectators. The trial could last as long as 16 months.

Her indictment over alleged misuse of the presidential office's state affairs fund has hurt the president's image and hobbled the ruling party, which was formed 20 years ago on a populist clean government platform.

Last month's indictment included charges against Wu, along with several of Chen's former and current aides, who will also be tried beginning today.

A prosecutor said in November he also had enough evidence to indict Chen for corruption if his status as president did not make him immune.

Chen, who has said the money was used for legitimate government business, has offered to resign if his wife is convicted. Chen was elected in 2000 and 2004.

Although Wu could attend today's morning session, a court spokesman said that because of her health -- she uses a wheelchair following an accident in 1985 -- she may not show up in person.

Lawyers from both sides will attend the Friday session, which kicks off a preparatory period before the actual trial, the court spokesman said.
