Siniora expects Russian help in resolving Lebanon crisis
Moscow, Dec 15 (UNI) Visiting Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora today said he expected Russian help in resolving the crisis in his country.
Mr Siniora arrived in Moscow for talks with his Russian counterpart as he has been under enormous pressure by the pro-Syrian opposition to resign.
Lebanon has always sought a good relationship with Syria, he said on his arrival.
''Syria contributed to the withdrawal of the Israeli force from Lebanese territories. We are grateful for that assistance. I believe that the principles of cooperation should be mutually beneficial ones,'' he said.
''Relations between Lebanon and Syria do have a future. We are still to discuss many issues, and both countries will only benefit from this,'' the Lebanese prime minister, adding that Russia can exert certain efforts in this situation.
He also said it was necessary to create an international tribunal to investigate the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
''There are still some differences over the issue, but the tribunal's creation will be in line with Lebanese laws,'' Itar-Tass news agency quoted him as saying.
The tribunal will be created in three stages. At first, two foreign judges and one Lebanese judge will review preliminary investigation results. In the second stage, three foreign and two Lebanese judges will proceed with the probe.
''We are hoping this will guarantee impartiality, we want to know the truth, we want to give freedom to the Lebanese. We want to ensure they feel no fear of terrorist attacks. We also want to prevent attempts at political assassinations'' Mr Siniora said.
''Russia has supported the creation of an international tribunal and we very appreciate these efforts, he added.
