Government has no plans to grow sugarcane in Brazil
New Delhi, Dec 15 (UNI) The Government today denied it had plans to grow sugarcane in 100,000 hectares of leased land in Brazil.
In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha , Union Minister of State for Agriculture Kanti Lal Bhuria said there was no proposal to grow sugar cane in Brazil. She had also asked if this move would be prejudicial for the farmers of the country if they were to grow sugar cane in that country.
He said a study to assess the cost of production of sugar cane was carried out under a comprehensive scheme for studying the cost of cultivation of principal crops in the country from time to time.
The cost of production of sugar cane in major sugarcane growing states ranged from Rs 63.82 a quintal in Karnataka while it was Rs 83.69 in Haryana in 2005-06. The cost of production includes all expenses in cash and kind including rent paid for lease of land and imputed value of wages of family labour, rental value of owned land and interest on fixed capital.
