Lowest ever human rights violations in J

Srinagar, Dec 14 (UNI) Lowest ever human rights violations have been registered in Jammu and Kashmir this year, an official spokesman said today.

As compared to 83 custodial killings and 66 disappearances in 1996, only four and one such cases respectively have been registered in the state during the current year.

''Categorical instructions have been given by the Centre and state government for respecting human rights and ensuring the graph at zero level on account of rights violations. The state registered remarkable decline in the incidents relating to human rights violations during the last year,'' the spokesman added.

He said as compared to 83 custodial killings from 1996 to 2002 these got reduced to only 24 from 2003 to 2005 while as only four such cases have been reported during 2006 so far.

Similarly, 66 custodial disappearances have been registered from 1996 to 2002 while as these got reduced to 11 from 2003 to 2005 and only one in 2006, the spokesman added.

He said the graph on these account has shown positive decline as every measure had been taken to avoid human rights violations.

In 1996, the spokesman said there have been 18 custodial deaths and 6 custodial disappearances, 6 custodial killings and 10 disappearances in 1997, 6 and 6 in 1998, the figures stood at 6 and 11 in 1999, 18 and 10 in 2000, 17 and 6 in 2001, it was recorded at 12 and 17 in 2002, 8 and 7 in 2003, the figures were 9 and 3 in 2004, 7 and one in 2005 while in 2006 only four custodial killings and one disappearance have been reported so far.
