CITU and AITUC threaten greater movement
Kolkata, Dec 14 (UNI) The CITU and AITUC in West Bengal congratulated the people for making today's 24-hour strike a success while pledging to intensify a nationwide agitation in support of their demand put forward by the NPMO.
In a statement, state CITU General Secretary Kali Ghosh said the strike was ''total'' in all sectors, including Bank and insurance offices, industry and agriculture, transport, airport, ports and government offices.
Mr Ghosh claimed they had not applied force anywhere to make the strike a success as the people participated in it 'spontaneously'.
'' With this' we appeal to the people to make preparations for a greater and intensified movement against the UPA Government's anti-people policies, '' he said.
AITUC state general secretary Ranajit Ghosh said the strike was a unique demonstration of protest and indignation against the ''anti- people'' and ''anti-worker'' policies of the Government and gross violation of the Common Minimum programme.
'' In West Bengal, the workers' response is unprecedented...most remarkable is the parfticipation of unorganised workers, '' he said.
Mr Ghosh said the NPMO, the platform of 56 mass organisations that gave the strike call, would decide its future course of action by January next which could include rail and road blockade programmes.
