RSP not in favour of acquisition of farm land at Singur

Midnapur, Dec 13 (UNI) The RSP, a constituent of the ruling Left Front in West Bengal, was opposed to the acquisition of multi-crop land at Singur for setting up Tata's small car unit.

Talking to newsmen here, state PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami said, "We are not against industrialisation. But we don't vouch for industries in agricultural land. We have made our intention clear in the Left Front Committee meeting." Commenting on Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee's fast on Singur issue, Mr Goswami said, "It is for her party to take a decision. Her party is different. We are in the Left Front and we have to work jointly." He said Rs 1000 crore would be spent on repair and construction of new roads in the state shortly.

The state highways will be henceforth widened to seven mt from the present 5.5 mt, he said.

Dwelling on the quality of the state highways and NHAI roads, he said while Rs eight crore was spent per km for NHAI roads, the equivalent expenditure for state highways was only Rs 30 lakh.

He assured a bridge over the Silabati at Maita connecting Bankura with Midnapur and another bridge on Ketia cannel at Sandhipur.

All village roads, destroyed due to Maoist activities in tribal areas of the state, would be shortly reconstructed, he added.
