RS approves 3 Central Universities for North-East
New Delhi, Dec 13 (UNI) Rajya Sabha today passed three separate Bills for the creation of three Central Universities in the states of Sikkim, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh.
With the passage of the Bill to create these Universities, every North-Eastern state will now have a Central University taking their number to 24 in the country. The new Central Universities given the Central status are Sikkim University, Rajiv Gandhi University (Arunachal Pradesh) and Tripura University. He said it was part of implementing the promise made by Common Minimum Programme of the UPA coalition.
Piloting the Bill, Minister of State for Human Resources M A A Fatmi said India, which had a mere 20 universities and 500 colleges in 1947, now has 358 universities and 18,000 colleges.
Members, cutting across party lines, welcomed the passage of the Bill by thumping their desks as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan announced that the Bills were passed.
