Maharashtra sex ratio has decreased: Mundhada

Nagpur, Dec 13 (UNI) The sex ratio in Maharashtra has decreased because of female foeticide in the State, Minister for Health Dr Vimal Mundhada told the State Legislative Assembly today.

In a written reply to Nitin Raut and Chandrakant Chhajed (both Congress), Dr Mundhada said as per census figures, the sex ratio had decreased from 934 females per 1,000 males in 1991 to 922 females in 2001.

The government has decided to send 'decoy' cases with the help of voluntary organisations to identify medical practitioners who performed sex determination tests in violation of legal provisions, Dr Mundhada said. The government would reimburse expenses up to Rs 15,000 to the voluntary organisations participating in the drive, she said.

PUNE RAGGING: Nikhil Sahu, a student of B J Medical College, found guilty of ragging a junior student, has been suspended from the college and the hostel Minister for Medical Education Dilip Walse-Patil told Sandipan Bhumare (Shiv Sena) and several others in a written reply.

Sahu was found guilty of ragging Akhilesh Shukla Mr Walse-Patil said. The working of Shukla's kidney was affected after the ragging on August 27 last, he said.

A third-year student of the college Rahul Sonkambekar, had committed suicide in his own house on August 31 last, but it was not because of ragging, the minister told the House.
