India wins mixed team Gold in chess with a round to spare
Doha, Dec 13 (UNI) Indian woodpushers won the mixed team Gold with a round to spare with a clinical 2.5-0.5 decimation of Indonesia in the penultimate round of the classical chess tournament of the Asian Games here tonight.
The Indian GM trio of K Sasikiran, P Harikrishna and Koneru Humpy helped the team maintain a clean slate and record their eighth straight win in the nine-round event to take their tally to a whopping 21 -- clear 5.5 points ahead of nearest rival China, thus making the final round redundant, atleast for the top slot.
Continuing their winning spree, the Indian juggernaut today crushed Indonesia with only P Harikrishna missing a win and splitting points with GM Susanto Megaranto on the second board.
On the top board, Grandmaster K Sasikiran proved tactically way ahead of his opponent Wahjuwidajat Utut Adianto.
Sasikran ruled the proceedings right from the beginning and his strong attacking opening tilted the match early in his favour and it was just a matter of time before he wrapped up the tie.
On the women's board, Grandmaster Koneru Humpy continued her ominous form and made the right moves as she decimated WFM Irine Kharisma Sukander. This was Humpy's second win over the Indonesian, whom she had defeated in the seventh round of the rapid chess event.
