Farmers block traffic in Punjab against SEZ policy
Chandigarh, Dec 13 (UNI) Several trains were delayed after farmers blocked rail traffic at about ten places in Punjab to protest against the government policy of acquiring fertile agricultural land for Special Economic Zones (SEZs).
The protest was organised by the Kirti Kisan Union.
The Union president Hardev Singh Sandhu said here today that rail traffic was blocked at various railway crossing in Amritsar, Kapurthala, Sangrur, Gurdaspur, Moga, Kot Kapura, Ludhiana and Banga from 1200 hours to 1400 hours.
Refering to the falling wheat production, Mr Sandhu said if the government did not impose a ban on acquiring agricultural land for industrial use, the country would face a shortage of wheat and other foodgrains in the near future. People will be buying 'atta' (wheat flour) at Rs 20 a kg in two years time, he warned.
