Shillong, Dec 12 (UNI) The Meghalaya People's Human Rights Council (MPHRC) has urged the Meghalaya government to constitute a state Human Rights Commission.

MPHRC Secretary General Dino D G Dympep said even the National Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice A S Anand had written to the Meghalaya government.

According to Justice Anand, the Human Rights activist said the government informed the NHRC its failure to constitute the Commission due to ''financial constraints''.

Talking to newsmen on the sidelines of international Human Rights Day, Mr Dympep said Asom and Manipur have set up the Commission which has benefitted the poor of the poorest.

''If the government can constitute a Women's Commission why not the state Human Rights Commission,'' he observed.

However, Mr Dympep reiterated that the Council will continue to insist that the state government to constitute a state Human Rights Commission.
