Tribals threaten to continue agitation

Shimla, Dec 11 (UNI) The villagers, opposing the setting up of the 1,000 MW Karcham Wangtoo hydel project in Kinnuar district of Himachal Pradesh, today decided to support central government employees and trade unions strike on December 14.

The villagers, who have already stalled the construction work since November 15, are demanding a judicial probe into the police action on the protesting people at Wangtoo on Saturday, suspension of police officers involved in it and cancellation of the MoU with Jai Prakash Industries which is executing the project.

Besides, they are also demanding suspension of the work until their concerns were adequately addressed.

Meanwhile, the state unit of the CPM held dharna and protests throughout the state today in support of the agitation.

The party also submitted a memorandum to the chief minister, through the district administration, supporting the demands of the agitating villagers and violations of the MoU by the JP Industry.
